Talking Tips: Preteens
Around this age, children are starting to do more things on their own, including forming friendships. Stay involved and be aware of what your child is doing and who he or she is with. When friends start coming over, the rules of your house become even more important. There should be no question about where you stand on alcohol.
At this age, kids are starting to understand actions and consequences. It may be a good time to discuss laws about alcohol, the effects of alcohol on the body, responsible drinking and family history in more depth.
Remember, it’s not about instilling a fear of alcohol (or of you), but giving them information and insights that will encourage them to make positive decisions on their own.
